Kim Rhode won the Women’s Skeet gold medal at this year’s Pan American (Pan Am) Games in Toronto. Team USA’s sole women’s skeet competitor was able to beat Argentinian Melisa Gil 15-12, dropping only one target in the gold-medal match. In the semifinal match, she set a Pan Am Games record with a perfect 16/16 score. Her qualification score of 74/75 is also a Pan Am Games record, and tied the current world record. This is Rhode’s fourth medal overall and second gold at the Pan Am Games.

When asked if she ever “plinked” or shot just for fun, Ruby reflected for a moment and answered: “Shooting was always serious. It was a job that I loved. It was reverent. It was always a dress-up performance.”

The final opportunity for athletes to earn Paralympic quotas will take place here in the United States when USA Shooting hosts the final International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Shooting World Cup of the season November 3-7 at the home of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) in Fort Benning, Georgia.

The U.S. International Shooting Hall of Fame will induct Glenn Dubis and Admiral Willis A. Lee during a ceremony expected to draw roughly 200 alumni, fellow Hall-of-Famers and current athletes and coaches. The four-time Olympian Dubis and the seven-time Olympic medalist Admiral Lee were selected among an all-star cast of candidates.

Olympians Michael McPhail, Keith Sanderson as well as Paralympic hopeful Mike Tagliapietra have been named USA Shooting’s Athletes of the Year in their respective disciplines.

The National Firearms Museum recently debuted a new plaque honoring Ruby Fox in its “Olympic and International Shooting” display. The plaque features a famous picture of Fox holding her signature Hämmerli 208, along with a gold NRA National Championship medallion she won at Camp Perry.

After the United States withdrew from International Shooting Union sanctioned competition, U.S. international shooting was confined to the annual Dewar Team match and the Pershing Team competition.

Years of build up. Hours upon hours of prep. Bullets cast and guns raised. All for a 10-day period of time that defines our existence as athletes and a sport.
