The CMP has announced the Talladega 600, a new match at the new Talladega Marksmanship Park. The event has been designed to appeal to rifle, pistol and shotgun fans to provide a wide variety of marksmanship opportunities for competitive shooting enthusiasts.

As-issued Vintage Military Rifle (VMR) Games levels the equipment playing field, emphasizing personal skills while also avoiding the escalating arms race for more and more precise—and expensive—target rifles and designer cartridges.

When CMP introduced the “as-issued” games a little over a decade ago, a military surplus Mauser or Mosin-Nagant could be had for about $100 and an M1 carbine in NRA Very Good condition fetched, if memory serves, about $400. Today—thanks in large part to the skyrocketing popularity of the carbine—a quick online check of non-collector milsurp M1 carbine prices varies from $630 to $1350. Whether that is still “inexpensive” is up to the individual shooter’s wallet.

Junior Rhiann Travis was the Overall winner in then Rifle competition at the 2015 Dixie Double. Following in second was Sarah Beard, while Daniel Lowe rounded out the Top 3.

The first U.S. military surplus firearms released by the government since the early decades following WWII is now a possibility. The recently passed National Defense Authorization Act of 2016 allows the Secretary of the Army to annually transfer up to 10,000 surplus M1911/M1911A1 pistols to the Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety (CMP) for subsequent sale to competitors and collectors.

Competitors were challenged at a USPSA match last November in Talladega, the sixth USPSA Match held at the park since it opened last year.

Electronic targets are not new, they have been used for years in International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) style shooting for smallbore rifle, pistol, and air rifle and pistol in the U.S.

Warm weather greeted 270 competitors on the firing lines of the Talladega Marksmanship Park at the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Inaugural Talladega 600 last December.
