The 2023 NRA National Precision Pistol Championships at Camp Atterbury were held July 18-22. This summer marked the third year that the National Rifle Association held the Precision Pistol Nationals at Camp Atterbury, an active Indiana National Guard base located about 37 miles south of Indianapolis.
NRA Precision Pistol is fired at 25 and 50 yards with a one-handed grip. The 50-yard Precision Pistol targets pictured above have just been changed after a string of fire. Note the target on the far left is using a target repair center.
The NRA National Precision Pistol Championships are comprised of the traditional bullseye three-gun course of fire—a 2700-point aggregate drawn from the .22 Caliber, Centerfire and .45 Caliber championships.
The winner of the 2023 NRA National Precision Pistol Championship was Jon Shue of Liberty, North Carolina. He walked away from the NRA Precision Pistol Nationals with a score of 2662-135X, a full 25 points ahead of this year’s runner-up, John Zurek. Additionally, Shue’s victory at Camp Atterbury arrived hot off the heels of his win at the 2023 CMP Pistol Championship at Camp Perry, Ohio.
Kimberly Hobart-Fleming of New Philadelphia, Ohio, secured the 2023 NRA National Precision Pistol Woman’s Championship at Camp Atterbury after posting a score of 2498-62X.

In third place was Travis A. Jorgenson (right) of Dent, Minnesota, who posted a score of 2630-121X. Shue is holding the Harrison Trophy.
This summer, John Zurek captured more than the National Precision Pistol Championship runner-up title. He also finished third in the .22 Caliber Championship with a score of 885-40X, as well as runner-up in the .45 Caliber Championship with 886-47X, only one point behind the winner Jon Shue.
This year at the NRA National Precision Pistol Championships awards ceremony, Match Director Kenn Boyd was presented with a special plaque from NRA National Pistol Manager Stephen Lucas.
Legendary law enforcement competitor Phil Hemphill of Meridian, Mississippi—pictured above at the awards ceremony with NRA Second Vice President David Coy—was the 2023 NRA National Precision Pistol Championship High Police shooter with a score of 2612-108X. Sadly, Hemphill passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023.
Steven Pardieck, pictured above scoring a target, is the Indiana State Rifle and Pistol Association’s vice president for pistol.
The 2023 Mayleigh Cup Team is pictured above on the pistol range at Camp Atterbury after firing for record had ended.
High Master shooter Dave Lange finished in eighth place overall with a score of 2609-91X.

The NRA Precision Pistol Nationals, along with the High Power Rifle Nationals and Smallbore Rifle Nationals, are the three major competitions that comprise the NRA National Matches.
This year’s NRA National Precision Pistol Champion, Jon Shue, fired a winning score of 2662-135X that also netted him the High Civilian and High Military Veteran awards.
