More than 160 competitors took to the firing line for the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s 2024 High Power Warm-Up Matches held at Camp Perry, Ohio, June 20-23. Leading one of the featured competitions—the Ohio Governor’s Match—was 15-year-old Sabrina Smith, a resident of Concord Township, Ohio, who posted a score of 487-9X—three points ahead of the runner-up.

With her win, Smith collected her remaining Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) points to earn her Distinguished Rifleman Badge.

The 2024 CMP High Power Warm-Up matches were presented in cooperation with the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association, who awarded its own special recognitions for the ORPA State Championship Match (1600 Aggregate), along with the aforementioned Ohio Governor's Match (the EIC Service Rifle Match).

In addition, the 2024 High Power Warm-Up Matches were conducted entirely on CMP’s line of outdoor electronic targets.

Joseph Hendricks, Jr., age 28, of Seville, Ohio, claimed the top spot in the Service Rifle 1600 Aggregate with a score of 1571-42X, while Terrence Paul, age 72, of Cleveland, Ohio, overtook the Match Rifle Aggregate with 1572-73X.

Roy Mitchell, age 53, of Parma, Ohio, led the 30-Shot Rifle Match before pairing up with Randall Olds to form a team, named “Boat in the Impact,” and earning the overall win in the Two-Person Team event with a score of 984-37X.

A Mid-Range 3x600 Match was also held during the CMP High Power Warm-Up event, with close to 100 entries. The top finishers of each category are listed below.

  • Overall: Aaron Guliuzza, 42, Jefferson, Ohio, 1181-51X
  • Service Rifle: Michael King, 45, Fort Wayne, Ind., 1172-45X
  • Match Rifle: Thomas Bopple, 61, Medina, Ohio, 1174-55X
  • F-Class: Glenn Fear, 48, Youngstown, Ohio, 1163-39X
  • AR Tactical: Michael Scocos, 77, Copley, Ohio, 594-33X

Camp Perry also played host to a Garand, Springfield, Modern and Vintage Rifle Match on the electronic targets of Petrarca Range on June 22. The top competitors are listed below.

  • Garand: Jeffrey Helwagen, 64, Grove City, Ohio, 265-3X
  • Springfield: Richard Nowicke, 66, Beverly Hills, Mich., 277-3X
  • Vintage Military: Richard Nowicke, 66, Beverly Hills, Mich., 281-4X
  • Modern Military: Patrick Barrett, 67, Hamburg, N.Y., 286-4X

“It was a challenging couple of days at the Warm-Up Matches,” CMP High Power Manager Brian Williams said. “The combination of the heat and windy conditions surely gave the competitors a challenge, but it was the perfect time to utilize the KTS electronic targets. By using the e-targets, we were able to get through the matches quicker and keep competitors out of the pits pulling targets.”
