Henry Long Ranger Maintenance

Due to the complexity of the Henry Long Ranger 6.5 Creedmoor lever’s rack and pinion gear system and the need for precise reassembly to ensure proper gear timing, the company discourages owner removal of the rifle’s bolt and lever. In fact, the factory routinely receives rifles for reassembly from chagrined owners who attempt it on their own. (Shipping a rifle, by the way, costs $35 or more.) Though instructions for bolt removal and reinstallation are not included with the owner’s manual, Henry will email a Long Ranger owner a PDF of the disassembly/reassembly procedure upon request.

In a practical user’s sense, what this means is that cleaning the Long Ranger’s bore by the less-mechanically inclined shooter must be done from the muzzle end if using a cleaning rod. A properly fitting cleaning rod with a muzzle protector will help prevent damage or wear to the muzzle, but a better way to accomplish cleaning is with a pull-through type device like Hoppe’s Boresnake. The Boresnake has an integral, caliber-specific brush; dropped into the chamber to start from the breech end, the brush and several feet of cloth material make quick work of a dirty bore.

Boresnakes are available pretty much everywhere we find gun cleaning tools and equipment, and Hoppe’s has posted an instructional video on YouTube. You can also visit the company website here.
