In a breakout performance, Hillsdale’s Kayla Mullin tops the field at the second annual USPSA collegiate championship match at the Halter Center

The echo of brass and adrenaline filled the air at Hillsdale College’s Ailes Action Shooting Range, where precision came with pressure and a national title was on the line. Under crisp skies, Kayla Mullin did more than win—she left little room for doubt.

At the second annual USPSA Collegiate Championship, hosted in partnership with Springfield Armory at Hillsdale College’s Ailes Action Shooting Range, Hillsdale College shooter Kayla Mullin topped the Limited division leaderboard with 1075.08 points. She outshot the entire field of men and women, walking away with the national title.

“Hillsdale’s shooting sports program attracts skilled and dedicated athletes, and Kayla’s achievement is an exciting milestone for the team,” said Adam Burlew, head coach of the Hillsdale College Action Shooting Team. “We were excited to host this competition with Springfield Armory again this year, and we look forward to more in the future.”

Held at the John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center, the 2025 competition drew 53 shooters from around the country, including squads from Texas A&M, the Naval Academy, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Michigan State. The course featured 10 USPSA stages, with competitors split into two divisions—Limited and Limited Optics—and the kind of fast-paced precision that rewards composure as much as speed.

Hillsdale College delivered across the board. The team notched second-place finishes in both divisions. In Limited Optics, Hillsdale’s team of John Beecher, Joseph Grohs, Jonah Kirstein and Brendan Burnham racked up 3840.84 points. In the Limited division, Mullin teamed up with Clara Bozzay, Jianna Coppola and Joseph Beecher for another second-place podium finish with a combined 2513.48 points.

After debuting the event last year with 36 competitors, Hillsdale’s collegiate action shooting match is growing fast. Drawing top-tier programs from across the U.S., the Halter Center is quickly becoming a proving ground for the next generation of USPSA competitors.

As for Mullin’s win, it wasn’t just a personal triumph. It sent a message. Hillsdale’s team isn’t just hosting: they’re showing up, putting down points and walking away with hardware.

Whether you’re new to the USPSA scene or a longtime competitor, this match proved one thing loud and clear: the college action shooting world just got a lot more competitive, with Kayla Mullin one of many leading the charge.
