Hillsdale College held its inaugural “Training for Liberty” retreat for men from August 19-21, offering firearms instruction, faculty-led lectures and evening receptions at the college’s John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center in Hillsdale, Michigan.

The event included structured pistol and rifle training sessions led by certified instructors, with all equipment and ammunition provided. Participants also attended talks by Hillsdale faculty, shared catered meals and stayed in private accommodations at the college’s Dow Hotel.

“After the popularity of our couples’ and ladies’ shooting camps, we are excited to offer this brand-new retreat for men,” said Morgan Morrison, Hillsdale’s Director of Outdoor Programs. “Our guests enjoyed a full day of training and shooting, followed by bourbon, cigars and fellowship around the fire. All our retreats feature top-notch instruction and top-tier hospitality, and this one was no exception.”

The event was part of a broader summer program that included separate retreats for couples and women, including a “Ladies for Liberty Reunion” for returning participants seeking advanced instruction.

Winchester Ammunition provided the ammo for all camps again this year.

Located five miles from the college campus, the Halter Shooting Sports Education Center spans 113 acres and includes international skeet fields, an action shooting range, a five-stand indoor range and a 23-station sporting clays course. A 62,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor rifle and pistol facility is under construction and expected to be completed in 2025.

Since 2019, the Halter Center has also served as the training home of the USA Shooting National Team and regularly hosts national-level competitions and youth development programs.
