Smith & Wesson has expanded its lever-action lineup with a new variant of the Model 1854 Stealth Hunter chambered in .45-70 Government, marking a significant blend of traditional rifle heritage and contemporary firearm design. Officially released on September 9, 2025, this iteration brings the hard-hitting .45-70 Gov't cartridge into a rifle already known for its tactical enhancements and rugged design.

Outfitted with a 16½-inch 410 stainless-steel barrel finished in matte black Armornite, the rifle weighs in at a manageable 6.57 pounds and measures just 34.3 inches in overall length. A shortened barrel helps to keep things compact, while the forged 416 stainless-steel receiver provides durability.

The newest Model 1854 Stealth Hunter lever-action rifle sports an 8-groove, 1:20-inch twist rate—optimized for stabilizing a range of .45-70 Gov't projectiles. Feeding is via a 5+1 tube magazine, offering a good balance between capacity and weight. (Photo courtesy Smith & Wesson)

The rifle boasts a 5+1 capacity and is designed for versatility. A large loop lever accommodates gloved hands, while an 11/16x24 threaded muzzle with a thread protector allows for suppressor use—features clearly aimed at hunters and backcountry shooters.

Internally, the rifle keeps things classic with an 8-groove, 1:20-inch right-hand twist barrel optimized for stabilizing the heavy projectiles typical of .45-70 Gov't loads. Smith & Wesson’s lever-action system is known for its smooth cycling, and this model carries that forward with a reinforced, reliable action.

The visual appeal of the Model 1854 Stealth Hunter leans into the tactical realm with its all-black aesthetic, but its upgrades go beyond appearances. A flat-faced trigger offers consistent indexing, and the extended 10½-inch Picatinny rail allows users to run scopes, red dots or magnifiers with ample room for customization. The redesigned fore-end is made of T6 aluminum and incorporates 15 M-LOK slots, making it easy to attach accessories as needed.

A HIVIZ Litewave H3 fiber-optic front sight paired with an adjustable XS Sights ghost ring in the rear makes for fast target acquisition in both daylight and low-light conditions.

While purists might balk at the tactical styling, it’s clear that the Stealth Hunter series is built for users who want the reliability of lever-action with the adaptability of modern platforms. At an MSRP of $1,499, the .45-70 Gov't variant of the Model 1854 Stealth Hunter is Big Blue’s latest entry in the red-hot lever-action market.
