Team USA’s quest for a podium finish in the Men’s 50m Smallbore 3-Position Rifle event at the Paris 2024 Olympics came to an end when Ivan Roe and Rylan Kissell both failed to qualify for the final after qualification on Wednesday, July 31. The event was held at the Chateauroux Shooting Center in Chateauroux, France, along with all other Paris 2024 Olympic shooting events.

Roe, who is from Alabama and is a sergeant serving in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, exited the Men’s 50m Smallbore 3-Position Rifle event qualification round in 20th place with a score of 587-32X. The Paris 2024 Olympics this week are his first time competing at the Games. Roe’s best performance in the Men’s 50m Smallbore 3-Position Rifle event was in kneeling position with a score of 198, along with 197 in prone.

As for Kissell, who hails from Colorado Springs, Colorado, he wrapped up Men’s 50m Smallbore 3-Position Rifle qualification in 38th place with a score of 579-25X. The Paris 2024 Games also marked his Olympic debut. The best two position scores for the former University of Alaska-Fairbanks rifle team standout were 196 in kneeling, followed by 192 in prone.

There were 44 shooters competing in the Paris 2024 Men’s 50m Smallbore 3-Position Rifle event qualification round.

Earlier this week at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Roe and Kissell both competed in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle and Mixed Team 10m Air Rifle events. While they each posted solid performances in these events, it was not enough to advance the finals. For the Mixed Team events, Roe was paired with Team USA shooter Sagen Maddalena, while Kissell partnered with Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Mary Tucker.

So far for Team USA at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the best shooting event results have been Sagen Maddalena taking fourth place in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event on Monday, followed by Derrick Mein ranking fifth on the Men’s Trap leaderboard after the event final on Tuesday.

Maddalena, who previously competed only in the Women’s 50m Smallbore 3-Position rifle event at the Tokyo 2020 Games, advanced to the Women’s 10m Air Rifle final for the first time in her shooting career.

“I feel excited, I feel like I could throw up right now,” Maddalena said to USA Shooting’s Brittany Nelson after qualifying for the Women’s 10m Air Rifle final earlier this week. “I am excited for the opportunity to be a sportsman on the biggest stage there is in the shooting events.”

Maddalena, who like Ivan Roe is a sergeant currently serving in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, will next compete in the Women’s 50m Smallbore Rifle event at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday.

Next up for USA Shooting athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be the aforementioned Women’s 50m Smallbore 3-Position Rifle qualification round on Thursday, followed by Men’s Skeet, Women’s Skeet and Mixed Team Skeet events later in the week. Additionally, Team USA will have shooters competing in the Women’s 25m Sport Pistol and Men’s Rapid-Fire Pistol events later this week.
