2024 CAT Games: U.S. Rifle, Pistol Athletes Earn 16 Medals

USA Shooting had a medal bonanza at the 2024 Championship of the Americas, with athletes returning to the U.S. with 16 total medals. The competition was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Mar. 31 to Apr. 8.

USA Shooting athletes secured 16 medals at the 2024 Championship of the Americas (CAT) Games held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, March 31 to April 8.

The U.S. was one of the 21 countries competing for a chance to raise our flag over the podium. More than 170 athletes participated in the annual rifle and pistol competition. In addition, many Paris 2024 Olympic qualified athletes competed and earned medals for the U.S. at the CAT Games.

Nick Mowrer, a two-time Olympian, earned the first medal for the U.S. with a silver in Men’s 10m Air Pistol. Mowrer made his way into the final after shooting a qualification score of 572. Teammate Jay Shi also shot a qualification score of 572 and competed in the final alongside Mowrer. Mowrer—a soldier in the U.S. Army World Class Athlete program—triumphed over Tugrul Ozer of Canada to capture the silver medal.

Women’s air pistol athletes continued America’s success on the firing line by earning two more spots on the podium. Paris 2024 Olympic qualified athletes Katelyn Abeln and Lexi Lagan earned silver and bronze medals, respectively. The latter qualified for the final by shooting a score of 576, while Abeln qualified with a score of 571. Lagan qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Women’s Air Pistol and Abeln qualified for both Women’s Air and Sport Pistol in January.

Abeln also helped the Women’s 25m Sport Pistol Team win the gold medal with teammates Ada Korkhin and Lisa Emmert-Traciak.

Sagen Maddalena, also Paris qualified, earned the U.S. another CAT Games medal by securing gold in Women’s 50m Smallbore Rifle. Maddalena, a sergeant in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, clinched the gold medal by defeating Andrea Palafox of Mexico, who finished second.

Maddalena tripled her gold medal count by also placing first in both Women’s 10m Air Rifle and 50m Rifle Prone. She then earned a silver medal with teammate Ivan Roe in Mixed Team Air Rifle. Maddalena will be competing at the Paris Olympics this summer in both Women’s 10m Air Rifle and Women’s 50m Smallbore Rifle.

Roe, another Paris qualified athlete, took home more than just the Mixed Team Air Rifle silver medal. He topped the leaderboard in Men’s 50m Smallbore Rifle, winning gold by outshooting Tye Ikeda of Canada, who had to settle for second place. Roe, a sergeant in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, went on to earn a total of six medals at the 2024 CAT Games. The Manhattan, Montana, native will be competing in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle, Mixed Team Air Rifle and Men’s 50m Smallbore Rifle events at the Olympics in Paris this summer.

Tim Sherry, a staff sergeant in the in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, shared the podium with Roe and Braden Peiser when the trio earned gold in Men’s 50m Smalbore Team. Sherry, of Evergreen, Colorado, found himself back on the podium several times during the competition, earning a total of four medals at the 2024 CAT Games.

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Ali Weisz and 2023 Pan American Games medalist Rylan Kissell also contributed to the overall U.S. medal count. The duo earned gold in Mixed Team Air Rifle, Weisz took home silver in Women’s 10m Air Rifle and Kissell joined Sherry and Roe on the top of the podium for gold in Men’s 10m Air Rifle Team.
