Beretta’s latest spin on its race-gun-derived 92X Performance platform doesn’t reinvent the wheel so much as machine it to tighter tolerances and dip it in three loud new paint cans.
Chambered in 9 mm Luger, the 92X Performance Carry Optic Dark Series—offered in Midnight Squall (blue), Scorched Earth (red) and Solar Flare (yellow)—leans into competition features while adding refinements that make the pistols feel more modern and less like a museum piece from the metal-frame era.
The Dark Series keeps the fundamentals that made the original 92X Performance a competitive-shooting darling: a steel Vertec frame, deep front-and-backstrap checkering and a hefty 47.7-ounce curb weight that tames recoil the way a well-fit golf glove calms nerves on the tee box. The balance feels deliberate—like Beretta mass-tuned the frame not just for physics but for swagger.
But the updates aren’t just cosmetic. The new pistols ship with a graphite gray Tinitec finish, adding durability and a low-glare sheen that’s more “pro-tour blade iron” than “tacticool flat black.” A match-grade disassembly latch speeds up maintenance in the middle of a match—less NASCAR pit stop, more Formula One tire change. And the beveled magazine well will help minimize fumbles when the timer hits zero.
Then there’s the Xtreme-S trigger. Fully adjustable for take-up, break and overtravel, it trims reset by up to 40% compared with standard 90-series triggers. It’s a rare case of a factory trigger that doesn’t feel like a compromise.
Up top, the slide arrives optic-ready for MRDS sights, with mounting plates included in the box. It’s clear Beretta expects shooters to run a red dot, and the gun feels designed around that assumption rather than merely tolerating it.
Capacity jumps to 18 rounds, riding in two included magazines with extended baseplates. A reversible, oversized magazine release keeps reloads accessible whether you’re right- or left-handed. A 3-slot Picatinny rail, match fiber-optic front sight and flat rear sight finish off the competition-leaning package.
For USPSA Carry Optics competitors, the Dark Series checks every regulatory box—and then some. For everyone else, it’s a steel-frame performance handgun that blends old-school mass with modern expectations for speed and modularity.
MSRP for each model is $1,699.
If Beretta’s goal was to give the 92X Performance a fresh identity without losing the DNA that made it a podium staple, the Dark Series feels like a confident swing—and a solid connection.
