As thousands of runners circled through Akron for the Sept. 26 Akron Marathon, the Akron rifle team was in Lincoln, Nebraska, circling the wagons for a battle of its own against the Huskers of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Cornhuskers proved too hot to handle as the contest progressed, with No. 4 Nebraska (4743) finishing ahead of No. 15 Akron (4673). That total was the seventh-highest team score in Husker program history.

In smallbore, Akron senior Logan McClimans fired a solid 584, placing fifth overall and improving his career best by a full two points. Sophomore Kathleen Moran was the only other Akron shooter to break into the elite 580s, posting an impressive 581.

In air rifle, freshman hotshot Madison “Maddie” Allen finished sixth overall and led the squad as the lone Zip to break into the 590s, firing a remarkable 592 out of 600.

Sophomore Matthew Kimball (589), Moran (588) and McClimans (586) rounded out Akron’s top four, helping the Zips post a team air rifle score of 2355.

Carley Seabrooke of Nebraska posted the top individual aggregate at the match with 1189-87X.
