Hillsdale College Opens Doors to New Nimrod Complex with Two-Day Public Open House

The 62,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor facility at the Halter Shooting Sports Center features rifle and pistol, air gun and archery ranges.

Hillsdale, Mich. (Mar. 3, 2026) — This weekend, the public gets its first look at one of the newest shooting sports facilities in the country.

Hillsdale College is hosting a two-day open house for the Nimrod Complex, a 62,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor archery, air gun, and rifle and pistol range at the John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center. The event runs Friday, March 6 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Halter Center, located at 4390 Bankers Road in Hillsdale, Michigan.

The Nimrod Complex houses 60 10-meter indoor precision lanes, 20 25-meter indoor archery lanes, 24 50-meter indoor/outdoor smallbore lanes and 12 50-foot indoor/outdoor covered retractable centerfire pistol lanes. The building also includes a 300-seat main room, a 24-person classroom for CPL and college courses, dedicated team storage for precision and archery, and a mezzanine viewing area overlooking the ranges. The inaugural match at the facility, a 60-shot air rifle and air pistol competition, was held on February 7.

The open house is designed for shooters of all experience levels. Visitors will have the opportunity to shoot on the archery, centerfire and air rifle ranges alongside Hillsdale’s collegiate team members, sign up for a range membership, browse the Liberty & Co. Pro Shop and pick up some gear. Raffles, giveaways and refreshments will also be part of the weekend.

Regular readers may remember our visit to the Halter Center in 2024, when we profiled Hillsdale’s rapidly growing shooting sports program. At the time, Range Manager Matt Little walked us through the 113-acre facility and offered a preview of what was then still under construction. Now complete, the Nimrod Complex represents the latest—and perhaps most ambitious—chapter in the Halter Center’s evolution.

Since opening with a single trap field in 2008, the Halter Center has grown into one of the most comprehensive shooting sports venues in the country. The 113-acre property now features four international skeet fields, a 25-station sporting clays course, eight American trap fields, five international bunkers, an action shooting range, a climate-controlled five-stand range, an international archery range and the new Nimrod Complex. The facility also includes the AcuSport Lodge and Grille and cottages for overnight lodging.

The Halter Center has served as the home of the USA Shooting National Team since 2019 and regularly hosts national-level competitions, including Junior Olympic development camps and championships in both international skeet and trap. Hillsdale’s own varsity shotgun and action shooting teams have claimed multiple national titles, and the addition of the Nimrod Complex positions the Halter Center to host collegiate, national and international competitions in rifle, pistol and archery as well.

The Nimrod Complex also advances Hillsdale’s broader educational mission. Beyond serving as a training home for the college’s shooting teams, the facility will host student shooting courses and public programming centered on firearm safety, responsible ownership and the principles of the Constitution and the Second Amendment—hallmarks of Hillsdale College’s approach to civic education.
