Springfield Armory’s new XD Mod.4 OSP is the fourth generation of the XD platform, and the most significant addition is a factory-milled slide that accepts red-dot optics through a plate-based mounting system. The price hasn’t moved much: $399 for either the standard 16-round or the 10-round variant for states with magazine capacity restrictions.
The OSP designation stands for Optical Sight Pistol, and the slide is where most of the generational changes are concentrated. The optics cut uses mounting plates—sold separately through the Springfield Armory Store—to accommodate a range of popular red-dot footprints. The slide itself is forged steel with a Melonite finish, and Springfield has deepened the front and rear serrations compared to earlier XD models, cutting them more aggressively for easier manipulation during press checks or when clearing malfunctions. The standard sights remain in place: a red fiber-optic front paired with a white-dot rear, which serve as co-witness or backup sights when a red dot is mounted.
The polymer frame carries aggressive texturing on the primary contact surfaces—grip panels, the front strap and the area beneath the trigger guard. An undercut trigger guard and extended beavertail allow the shooting hand to sit higher on the frame, which reduces the bore-to-hand distance and helps manage muzzle rise. The trigger is a flat-face design, a departure from the curved triggers on earlier XD generations, and is intended to produce a more consistent feel through the press. A MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail on the dustcover handles accessories.
The barrel is a 4-inch hammer-forged unit with 1:10-inch twist and a Melonite finish. The recoil system uses a dual captive spring on a full-length guide rod. The pistol weighs 27 ounces, measures 7.3 inches in overall length and stands 5.5 inches tall. In addition, the grip is 1.2 inches wide.
As for the XD’s safety architecture, the passive grip safety disengages with a normal firing grip and re-engages when the hand releases, adding a layer of drop protection without requiring the shooter to manipulate a manual lever. The striker status indicator on the rear of the slide provides a visual and tactile confirmation of whether the striker is cocked, while a loaded chamber indicator on top of the slide protrudes slightly when a round is chambered.
Springfield Armory’s XD Mod.4 OSP ships with one stainless steel magazine—16 rounds in the standard model, 10 in the low-capacity variant—and both carry the same $399 MSRP.
