John Brewster “J.B.” Hodgdon, a respected leader in the shooting sports community and co-founder of Hodgdon Powder Company, passed away on June 13, 2025, at the age of 88. A lifelong Kansan, Mr. Hodgdon’s legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of American firearms culture and youth shooting education.

Born on October 16, 1936, J.B. was raised in the Kansas City suburbs by his parents, Bruce and Amy Hodgdon. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong sense of civic duty, engaging with local first responders, youth organizations and classic car enthusiasts. He earned a business degree from the University of Kansas in 1959, setting the stage for a career that would shape an entire industry.

His professional life was defined by his role in building Hodgdon Powder Company into a household name among shooting and hunting enthusiasts. What began as a family operation—literally packaging powder at the kitchen table—grew into one of the nation’s leading suppliers of smokeless and black powder substitute propellants. J.B. was instrumental in expanding the company’s global footprint and was a familiar face at trade shows and industry events. He held numerous leadership positions on the company’s board, culminating in his appointment as Chairman Emeritus in 2025.

Beyond the boardroom, J.B. was a passionate outdoorsman. His home and office reflected his love for hunting, with a notable collection of trophies and firearms. He was also a tireless advocate for youth involvement in shooting sports, supporting programs at Philmont Scout Ranch and other initiatives that emphasized safety and education.

J.B.’s contributions earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the National Shooting Sports Foundation Hall of Fame in 2020. He and his brother Bob were jointly honored with NRA Media’s Golden Bullseye Pioneer Award in 2009, and that same year, J.B. received the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence Award.

He was a lifetime benefactor member of the National Rifle Association, a life member of the Kansas State Rifle Association and an active supporter of organizations such as Safari Club International, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the National 4-H Shooting Sports program.

“I have been associated with the Hodgdon family and J.B. Hodgdon for more than five decades,” Tom Shepherd, Hodgdon’s Chairman of the Board said. “J.B. was a first-rate owner, an incredible professional and a valued friend and counselor to work for during my career. He will be deeply missed.”

J.B. is survived by his wife of 28 years, Anne; four sons; two stepchildren; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His enduring legacy—marked by family, innovation, generosity and a deep love for the outdoors—will continue to influence generations to come.

Rest in peace to a legendary figure and pioneer in the shooting sports community.
