It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of NRA Museums Director E. Philip “Phil” Schreier, III, who died peacefully at home on Monday, December 29, 2025, at the age of 63. He had a remarkable career and led an extraordinary life dedicated to sharing the history of firearms in America. Watch this video tribute to Schreier via our friends at American Rifleman.
Phil Schreier served the NRA for more than 36 years, beginning his tenure in June 1989. An Eagle Scout and University of Maryland graduate, he was widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on historical firearms. His deep knowledge, passion for history and exceptional storytelling ability brought the American experience to life for millions.
Throughout his career, Phil was a trusted and respected voice within the firearms community. He became the public face of the NRA through countless television appearances and public engagements, always warmly received wherever he went. Phil was not only an ambassador for the NRA but also a devoted advocate for the Second Amendment.
Among his many roles, Phil managed the NRA Gun Collecting Department, attending thousands of gun shows both nationally and internationally. As senior curator of exhibits, he shaped the vision and narrative of the NRA National Firearms Museum, which opened in 1997 at the NRA’s headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia. Through the museum’s extensive collection of more than 2,000 firearms, Phil’s ability to connect visitors with history made every visit a memorable experience.
Phil Schreier’s passing is a profound loss to the NRA family and to all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the stories he told and the history he preserved.
