ZeroTech Optics USA’s new Trace X 5-25X 56 mm FFP RMG-H MRAD Illuminated riflescope, a name nearly as long as some stage briefs, puts an illuminated reticle in the first focal plane and pairs it with turrets that click in tenths of a milliradian. The company is pointing it at PRS and NRL Hunter competitors, along with long-range hunters who would rather hold than dial.

First focal plane is what makes the package work. As the magnification ring turns, the RMG-H grid grows and shrinks with the image, so a 1.5-mil wind hold at 8X is still 1.5 mils at 22X. There’s no rolling to a calibrated power before taking the shot and no mental conversion if you forget. ZeroTech calls the RMG-H a precision hunting reticle, with 0.1- and 0.2-MRAD resolution for fine wind holds. Turned down low, heavy outer bars and an illuminated center give the eye somewhere to land on close, fast targets, which is exactly where many FFP reticles thin out to a hairline.

ZeroTech’s RMG-H reticle has a fine MRAD grid in the center that extends 6 MRAD to each side and 10 MRAD below center for holdover and wind holds. Heavy outer posts marked at 10, 15 and 20 MRAD give the eye a fast reference at low magnification. (Photo courtesy of ZeroTech Optics)

The scope offers 34 MRAD of total elevation travel and 17 MRAD of windage. A mechanical zero stop sits underneath it all, so after cranking up for the far plate, the elevation turret spins back down and stops at zero.

Light comes in through a 56 mm objective with fully multi-coated lenses, and ZeroTech says some of the elements are German-made Schott glass. Field of view runs from 24.8 feet at 5X to 5 feet at 25X, both measured at 100 yards. Side-focus parallax adjusts from 22 yards to infinity, close enough to cover a rimfire training session at 25 yards. Eye relief is 3.82 inches, and the diopter adjusts from -3 to +2 with a lockring to keep it where you set it.

Everything sits in a 34 mm maintube machined from 6061-T6 aluminum with an IPX7 rating. All in, the scope weighs 31.5 ounces.

ZeroTech ships it with a neoprene scope cover, rubber lens cover, hex keys, microfiber cloth and a printed reticle manual, plus a card with a QR code linking to the full instruction manual. Coverage falls under the company’s Triple-A Lifetime Warranty, which is fully transferable and requires no receipt.

List price is $899, though ZeroTech’s website showed the Trace X 5-25X 56 mm at $749 at press time.
