NRA 2020 Rule Changes

Annual NRA rule changes are posted online as updated rulebook PDFs. The changes for 2020 approved by the NRA Board of Directors earlier this month are listed below. For the most up-to-date rulebooks, please visit rulebooks.nra.org.


NRA Action Pistol

ADDED - 3.2.4 Production Optic Firearm – Same configuration as a Production Firearm in Rule 3.2.2 with the exception of addition of an optic and that revolvers are not allowed. The following will apply:

  1. Pistol must be able to fit into Production Box if optic is removed
  2. Optical and or electrical sights must be attached only to the slide between the ejection port and the rear of the slide.


ADDED
– 3.8 Stocks – Any stock designed to add additional support from any other part of the body other than the hands or to fire from the shoulder is not permitted.

AMENDED – Rule 13.1 – Physically Disabled Shooters – A shooter who because of physical disability cannot fire from one or more of the prescribed shooting positions outlined in these Rules, or who must use special equipment when firing, is privileged to petition the NRA Protest Committee for permission to assume a special position or to use modified equipment, or both. The petition shall consist of a form provided by the NRA and shall specify in detail the reasons why the special position must be assumed or the special equipment must be used. The petition will be accompanied by pictures of the shooter in the position he desires approved and, if special equipment is required, the picture will show how this equipment is used. The petition and all pictures must be furnished in exact duplicate. The petition must be accompanied by a medical doctor’s statement if the physical disability is not completely evident in the pictures submitted.

Rule 3.11 – Clothing Regulations – All clothing must be made of loose fitting, non-binding material. All linings, padding and reinforcements must be the same specifications. Lining and padding must not be quilted, cross-stitched, glued, or otherwise affixed to the outer layer other than at normal tailoring points. The use of any special devices, means or garments which support or immobilize the shooter’s legs, body, or arms is prohibited. A button or safety pin may be used on the sleeve to aid in holding the sling in place. The button or safety pin should be used on the upper arm part of the shirt.

Rule 3.11.2 – Specifications

(b) Shooting Trousers – Trousers designed for shooting are not permitted. Only loose fitting trousers, loose fitting sweat pants, or loose fitting jeans are permitted.

(d) ...Compression garments are not allowed.

Rule 15.7 - Team Matches – Ties in team matches will be ranked in the order shown below:

a) If an aggregate team score includes a score achieved on a written test, tied teams will be ranked by fired scores only, and by considering a team score as though it were a single score fired by an individual.

b) By the greatest number of the team’s total center shots (Note Rule 14.11)

c) By the highest individual aggregate score, then second highest, etc.

d) If still a tie, apply Rule 15.3(f).

ADDED – Rule 3.1 – Note – For purposes of competition, magazine disconnects and loaded chamber indicators are not considered operational safeties as defined in Rule 3.1.

  2. (b) Indoor Pistol (Open, Metallic, .22 only)
