NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Doug Hamlin addressed the South Bay Republican Women at their monthly meeting held at the Torrance DoubleTree Hotel in Torrance, Calif., on Sept. 13, sharing critical updates on the organization’s legal and political efforts to defend the Second Amendment, both in California and nationwide.
Hamlin’s remarks covered recent Supreme Court victories for the NRA, including the landmark New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen decision, which affirmed the constitutional right to carry firearms in public for self-defense. He also discussed the NRA’s involvement in NRA v. Maria T. Vullo, a case that successfully challenged the New York state’s government attempts to use financial regulation as a means to silence political advocacy and a major win for the First Amendment and freedom.
A key topic was the NRA and California Rifle & Pistol Association-backed case Duncan v. Bonta, which challenges California’s ban on firearm magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. In August, the U.S. Supreme Court was petitioned to take up the case.
“Tens of millions of Americans lawfully own hundreds of millions of the magazines that California bans,” said Hamlin. “The Supreme Court should take this case to vindicate the rights of Californians and reaffirm that the Second Amendment prohibits the government from banning common arms.”
Hamlin also highlighted the NRA’s broader legal strategy in California, citing support for Rhode et al v. Becerra, a case seeking to overturn the state’s restrictive ammunition purchasing laws. These regulations unfairly burden lawful gun owners and infringe upon civil rights.
Turning to the political landscape, Hamlin credited the NRA’s grassroots efforts with helping secure key victories in the 2024 election cycle.
“The NRA’s support for President Donald J. Trump was instrumental in his historic 2024 victory,” Hamlin noted. “We also helped secure a pro-gun majority in the U.S. Senate and maintain a pro-gun majority in the House of Representatives.”
Joining Hamlin at the event was keynote speaker Carl Higbie, a U.S. Navy SEAL veteran and host of Carl Higbie Frontline on Newsmax. A vocal advocate for the Second Amendment and one of today’s leading conservative commentators, Higbie emphasized the importance of civic involvement and constitutional literacy during his remarks.
The South Bay Republican Women hosted the event as part of their ongoing mission to engage, educate and empower Republican women in California’s South Bay region. The organization describes itself as a “club of like-minded Republican women who care deeply about our local communities, our state and our country.” In addition to supporting candidates at all levels of government, the group offers firearm training programs.
