The 2025 CMP Talladega D-Day rifle and pistol matches delivered fireworks once again, highlighted by Chance Cavin of Madison, Mississippi, who set a trio of new event records in front of a crowd of more than 270 competitors at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama.
Cavin, 38, raised the bar with record-breaking performances in the Three-Gun Aggregate (869-26X), Four-Gun Aggregate (1157-38X) and Carbine (380-8X) categories. His dominance didn’t end there—he also captured wins in both the Garand and Vintage Military rifle matches, posting scores of 294-11X and 288-9X, respectively.

But Cavin wasn’t the only shooter making waves at Talladega.
Keith Schachle, 66, of Jasper, Georgia, etched his name into the Talladega D-Day competition record books by claiming the Springfield Match with a score of 289-8X. Schachle also teamed up with Ken Lore to lead the Boomers squad to victory in the Manual Vintage Sniper Team match after posting a 392-12X score.
On the pistol range, Kyle Kirschenmann, 61, of Tellico Plains, Tennessee, stood out with back-to-back wins. He topped the Military & Police Pistol Match leaderboard with 350-7X and cruised to a dominant victory in the As-Issued 1911 Match, outpacing the field by more than 20 points (357-5X).
The competition also featured shotgun events, where the team of Grant Lewis and Dudley Parker—shooting under the name “Sunshine”—claimed the Team Match title with a score of 163. Additionally, Mark Holland, 61, of Sanford, North Carolina, came out on top in the Five-Stand event with a score of 24.
Vintage Sniper Team titles were also up for grabs, with “SIRPC Iron Wind” (Paul Jackson and James Diehl) delivering the highest team score of the weekend at 394-16X in the Vietnam Era match.
Other standouts included Danny Arnold, 60, of Purcell, Oklahoma, who won the Modern Military match with a solid 295-18X, and Scott Godwin, 51, of Auburn, Alabama, who took home the Roosevelt Commemorative title with 289-7X.
In the benchrest rifle category, William Fairless, 30, of El Paso, Texas, emerged as the top Vintage Military shooter, while Wesley Underwood, 62, of Westminster, Colorado, scored an impressive 399-22X in Rimfire T-Class. Georgia’s Jack Prucha, 83, made his mark with a 359-1X win in Rimfire O-Class.
