DUBOIS, Pa. — The 2026 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Rifle Championships hosted by DuBois Rifle and Pistol Club wrapped up with the Everett High School Rifle Team winning gold in both the smallbore and air rifle events, marking the 20th and 21st state titles in program history. Everett’s smallbore team score of 2293-97X set a new state record, crushing our previously held record of 2257-67X set by our 2024 team. Kinzey Williams, Laila Mills and Lukas LaSalle finished 4th, 5th and 6th respectively in the smallbore event, with Johnny Golden finishing just outside of the top 10 at 11th.
Karlie Lynn, a senior from Tussey Mountain and a member of the Everett Junior Rifle Club, defended her titles from last year and once again took home gold in both events, smallbore and air rifle. Karlie has solidified herself as one of the very best shooters in the entire country. She has committed to shoot for national collegiate rifle powerhouse West Virginia University. In addition, Karlie was recently selected to join the U.S. Junior National Team and will be traveling to Cairo, Egypt, in April to represent our country and compete in both guns, smallbore and air rifle.
In smallbore, the Somerset H.S. Eagles finished as runner-up, DuBois H.S. was in third place and Chestnut Ridge H.S. was fourth.
On the air rifle side, Chestnut Ridge H.S. finished in second place, with DuBois H.S. taking third place.
Multiple new records were set this season. Everett’s regular season match score of 1424 shot on January 7, 2026, against Portage H.S. broke the previous state record we shot in 2018. And then less than a week later, it was broken again against Forest Hills H.S. with a 1425. The team average of 1407.5 is only the second time ever in state history that a team averaged a 1400+, which this season crushed Everett’s previous record of 1402.9 shot by the 2023-2024 team.
Some years, one of the hardest parts of coaching is picking the four that will shoot at states. This year, it all fell into place. Kinzey Williams, Laila Mills, Lukas LaSalle and Johnny Golden have led the way for Everett in every match and have been shooting some phenomenal scores. They travel all over the country competing in national matches and are gaining solid experience. Comparing last year’s scores to 2026, they have grown tremendously and are finding a lot of success. They have represented their high school team and junior club extremely well and the entire program is so proud of them.
As a coach, not only are we looking for the best possible immediate outcomes, but we’re also trying to find ways to set up our programs for success in the future. Even on the day that we won the championships, we're still looking for things we can do better. From being quicker on sight adjustments, choosing to go back into sighters sooner or remembering to fully charge your electronic air rifle trigger (yes, that is a thing), even state champs have room to improve. But one of the best parts of this weekend’s championship is realizing that all four of my kids that competed will be back next year. As special as this season was, next year should be even better. We have a bunch of other underclassmen that we're really excited about. Plus, we are already expecting several super talented 8th graders to join the team next year. Everett Rifle is not going anywhere anytime soon.
Our secret to success is no secret at all. It takes a ton of time and dedication not only from the kids, but from parents, family members and coaches, for any kid to reach their full potential. Just shooting during our 3-4 month team season doesn’t cut it if you really want to excel. Our serious kids are shooting all year long, smallbore (indoor and outdoor) and air rifle, plus attending clinics along the way. We’re blessed with an outstanding group of parents that understand the time and effort to get to the top and have committed to doing whatever it takes for their kids to reach their full potential.
We have a few things to wrap up this season yet, but we’re already planning our offseason training program. On top of regular practice and summer matches, we’re excited to be holding a camp for a bunch of kids with a recent Olympian to kick off our summer.
We still have one more championship to compete in this week. We will be hosting the state prone championship at the Everett Sportsman’s Club on Wednesday, February 25 at 2:30 p.m. This match is unique in that the top five qualifying rifle teams and top 15 individuals in each of the western, central and eastern regions of the state get to compete in this match. This championship is shot at three different locations around the state, one range in each region. Rifle teams in the western and eastern regions only shoot the prone position. Our league in central Pennsylvania shoots the three positions of prone, kneeling and standing. The other regions have an advantage in this since they only ever have to practice prone; however, we’ve had success in the past. Prone hasn’t been our best position all season but I look for our team to give it a good run.
