A U.S. Army small arms contract valued at $13 million has been awarded to Winchester Ammunition. The contract specifies the development of manufacturing processes for the 7.62 mm cartridge at the company's Lake City Army Ammunition Plant.

Winchester is the largest manufacturer of small caliber ammunition for the U.S. military.

As mentioned, contract-related work will be performed at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) located in Independence, Mo., which notably is the only government-owned, contractor-operated small caliber ammunition production facility in the United States. This latest 7.62 mm project was awarded under Winchester’s $8 billion contract to operate the LCAAP facility, which the company took control of last year.

The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant is the single largest producer of small arms ammunition for the United States Armed Forces. Military small arms cartridges made at LCAAP include 5.56 mm, 7.62 mm and .50-caliber.

Here is what Brett Flaugher, president of Winchester Ammunition, said about the new 7.62 mm cartridge contract with the Army.

“Winchester is extremely proud to have been awarded this military ammunition manufacturing development project. Our entire Lake City team is honored and wholly committed to supporting the U.S. Warfighter.”

Earlier this year, Winchester Ammunition scored a .308 Win./7.62x51 mm NATO small arms manufacturing contract from the Department of Justice for the FBI's sniper program totaling $5 million.
