New: Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5" AOS 9 mm

Springfield Armory announced the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5" AOS earlier this month. Chambered in 9 mm Luger, this pistol takes its 18-round magazine and full-size grip module from the standard Prodigy and pairs them with the aluminum frame, 3.5-inch bull barrel, shortened slide, trimmed beavertail grip safety and recontoured hammer of the Prodigy Compact, released last year. At 7 inches long, 5.5 inches tall and 29.3 ounces, it has an 18+1 round capacity.

Made from forged stainless steel, the match-grade barrel has a 1:16-inch twist and is coated in black diamond-like carbon. It runs bushingless against a captured guide rod, the same arrangement Prodigy buyers have been getting since launch. Two 18-round magazines ship in the box.

With a 3.5-inch bull barrel and shortened slide sitting on top of a full-length grip module, the Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5" AOS boasts 18+1-round capacity in a 29.3-ounce handgun.

The frame is billet 7075-T6 aluminum, hardcoat anodized beneath black Cerakote, with the forged carbon steel slide sporting the same finish. Additionally, extended thumb safeties on both sides carry over from the full-size guns, which keeps the manual of arms identical for southpaws and anyone who trains with the support hand.

Optics mounting runs through Springfield’s Agency Optic System. The rear sights live on the adapter plate rather than the slide, so switching red dots means switching plates and your irons come along for the ride. Springfield includes a cover plate and a Docter/Noblex-pattern plate, and a coupon knocks a second plate in whatever footprint you want down to $49. Front sight is tritium, while the rear is serrated black.

As for the grip texture, Springfield Armory’s Adaptive pattern is in full force, featuring tall flat-topped pyramids mixed with short pointed ones. Whether it beats plain checkering comes down to taste, though it shouldn’t damage a cover garment the way aggressive stippling can. In addition, a Picatinny rail sits under the dust cover for mounting accessories.

The Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5" AOS 9 mm handgun also features an extended thumb safety, trimmed beavertail grip safety and Picatinny accessory rail on the dust cover.

Restricted states get a 10-round version at the same price. Both the standard model and the low-capacity version list at $1,582.
