Team Federal’s Derrick Mein broke 660x800 to win the All-Around title at the 2026 NSCA National Sporting Clays Championship, held Oct. 17-25 at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio. He also finished second in the 300-target Main Event after shattering 282 targets.
Mein, a two-time Olympian from Kansas, was runner-up in two more events, shooting a 95x100 in Five-Stand and a 97x100 in the 20-Gauge event. He left Texas with $15,550 in winnings from a field of more than 2,600 shooters, many of them from overseas.
“I feel like I had a good week,” Mein said. “The All-Around is something I always strive for because it shows consistency across all of the events. I’ve won this award before and know the difficulty especially with such a strong field of competitors.”
He described the targets as fair and challenging and said a shooter needed a well-rounded game to handle them. A lens swap helped him steady his Sunday round.
“On Sunday, I had a difficult first station. By changing to a lighter lens color, I was able to have better visibility and I shot very well,” Mein said.
Most of his shooting is done with Federal target loads.
“I predominately shoot the 1-ounce HOA (High Over All) and the 1-ounce Papers in 1,290 fps from Federal,” said Mein. “HOA is a good all-around load and has gained my trust, but when I need to break a target at longer distances, I choose the Gold Medal Papers because I feel like they hold a little tighter pattern and hit a little harder.”
In July, Mein was part of the U.S. men’s team that won gold at the 48th World FITASC Championship in Lisbon, Portugal.
Mein plans to spend the next few weeks deer hunting before heading to Peru for the Championship of the Americas (CAT Games). A top finish there could earn the United States a quota place for the LA28 Olympic Games.
