Springfield Armory is now selling the serialized core of its Echelon pistol as a separate part. Announced Oct. 20, the Echelon Central Operating Group, or COG, lets buyers start with the pistol’s operating core and build the rest of the gun around it, choosing the grip module, slide assembly, barrel, sights, magazines and accessories themselves.
Flexibility was part of the Echelon’s design from the start. Its removable COG is what allows the pistol to change size and configuration. Until now, though, it came only inside a complete gun.
Springfield’s own grip modules come in three sizes: Compact, Full-Size and a Full-Size with a compact dust cover designed for a 4-inch slide. Slide assemblies are offered in 4- and 4.5-inch lengths, each available in standard or integrally compensated form. Several aftermarket grip modules and other components built for the Echelon are also available.
The Echelon COG is made of stainless steel and is precision machined to tight tolerances. Critical trigger components are machined from tool steel, and polished, coated surfaces are meant to cut friction for a smooth take-up and a predictable break. A second sear is designed to help prevent the pistol from firing if it is dropped.
“The serialized Central Operating Group established the modular nature of the duty-grade Echelon pistol from the beginning,” said Steve Kramer, vice president of marketing for Springfield Armory. “With the release of the standalone COG, shooting enthusiasts now have the means to craft a pistol configured exactly for their needs.”
Since the COG is serialized, buyers must have it transferred through an FFL. The standalone Echelon Central Operating Group (model EC9900-RET) has an MSRP of $295. For more information, visit springfield-armory.com.
