Announced Oct. 15, the updated version of Federal’s Ballistic AE app for iOS merges its heads-up display and DOPE chart into a single interactive workspace.

On this ballistics calculator, real-time trajectory data sits right beside the adjustment figures. Plus, wind direction, wind speed and range can be tweaked manually without leaving the screen. Elevation, environmental updates and wind corrections live there too, which cuts down on the toggling that eats up time behind the rifle.

Federal cleaned up the rest of the layout as well. Rifles, profiles and loads are better organized, and favorites-based menus put frequently used setups a tap or two away. Bluetooth connectivity pairs the app with wind meters and other supporting devices, while live weather integration and GPS-aware tools round out the field kit. For hunters who spend their season well past the last bar of cell service, it also works offline.

Under the refresh, the ballistic engine carries over. Ballistic AE calculates trajectory, windage and velocity for Federal, Remington, Fiocchi and Speer projectiles, and its G1 and G7 ballistic coefficient calculator accounts for aerodynamic jump and spin drift. Results can be printed as DOPE cards or exported as charts.

Every rifle gets its own profile. Users can store optics configurations along with twist rate, barrel length, sight height and zero distance, then pull from an extensive factory ammunition database or a library of proprietary bullets for custom handloads. Classic and modern cartridges are both well represented, and ballistic data for Federal’s Peak Alloy cartridges, including 7 mm Backcountry and 6.5 mm Creedmoor +Peak, comes built in.

“At Federal, we’ve always embraced technology to help shooters and hunters hit their mark,” said Jason Nash, Federal’s vice president of marketing. “This new and improved mobile app provides a better user experience, will improve the accuracy of their system and make them a better shooter.”
