Longshot App Update Cuts Lag and Brings Audio From the Target

Anyone who has walked 300 yards to check a group, and then walked back, understands why target cameras caught on. The camera sends the picture back to the firing line. How quickly and cleanly that picture arrives, and what you can do with it, depends on the software.

Texas-based Longshot Cameras has released version 5.3.5 of its Longshot App, with most of the changes dealing with speed and with how shooters mark and review their hits. The update follows the larger overhaul Longshot made earlier this year, when it rolled out a new generation of the app.

Company President Clay Rhoden said the work focused on two things: a quicker, more responsive app, and better tools for shooters once their shots are on paper.

Speed comes first. Longshot has upgraded its video streaming system to run more efficiently and with less latency, so the live view keeps closer pace with what is happening downrange.

Shooters running an Install or Competition Kit with a microphone can now hear the target end as well. The Longshot app streams audio from the camera along with the live video. Note that the audio feature is limited to those two systems and only works when the kit has a microphone.

Shot marking got several changes. An option to keep session markers lets shooters hold on to marked impacts as they work through a session instead of starting over. Plus, a new continuous marker count keeps a running tally as markers are added, which helps keep a long string of shots organized.

Longshot also updated the app’s Blinker Shot Locator. A new Capture on Mark function takes a fresh Blinker image automatically each time a shooter places a shot marker. That builds a record of each impact without extra taps and gives the shooter something to study during the session or after packing up.

Analyze Media is the other new feature: a dedicated space in the app for working with recorded video and images from a range session. Longshot demonstrates it in a walkthrough video on its YouTube channel.

These features join an app that already handled live target video, shot marking, group measurement, zero adjustment, session recording and media management. Version 5.3.5 is available now on iOS and Android for users with compatible Longshot systems.
