Results: 2024 NRA National High Power Rifle Mid-Range, Long-Range Championships

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit competitor Adam Fitzpatrick secures 2024 NRA Mid-Range national title, John Wilson wins Long-Range aggregate at Camp Atterbury in August.

The 2024 NRA National High Power Rifle Mid-Range Championships took place at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, during the NRA National Matches from August 11-14, followed by the NRA National High Power Rifle Long-Range Championships on August 16-19. Both matches were conducted on Camp Atterbury’s Range Six and were fired on electronic targets. Read on for recaps of both matches.

HIGH POWER RIFLE MID-RANGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

With a score of 2395-160X, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit shooter Spc. Adam Fitzpatrick of Columbus, Georgia, topped the 2024 NRA National High Power Mid-Range Championship leaderboard at Camp Atterbury in August.

Fitzpatrick also picked up the Mid-Range Palma title, while Jonathan O’Neal of Auburn, Georgia, followed up his 2024 NRA High Power OTC Service Rifle win with the same honor in Mid-Range after posting a score of 2376-124X.

Taking the runner-up spot was a familiar name—this year’s High Power OTC National Champion, Bob Gill of Visalia, California, who walked away from the NRA Mid-Range Nationals with a score of 2394-159X. Finishing in third place in the Mid-Range aggregate was Joseph F. Bakies of Lima, Ohio, with a score of 2393-155X.

As for the AR Tactical aggregate, it was an Army shooter, CWO Daniel J. Peters of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, who earned the top honor with a score of 2381-142X. The runner-up was Steven J. Slee of Dimondale, Michigan, with 2373-135X. Rounding out the top three in the AR Tactical aggregate was Leslie D. Lewis of Greenville, South Carolina, who posted a score of 2369-106X.

In this year’s Mid-Range Prone Team match, the winning team was USNRT-Rowe with 2390-136X. Team members were Kimberly Rowe, Larry Sollars, Staff Sgt. Jarrod McGaffic (U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit), Bob Gill and Team Captain and Coach Charles Rowe. Additionally, the high shooter on the USNRT-Rowe team was McGaffic with a score of 600-41X.

There were 36 total entries in the 2024 NRA National High Power Rifle Mid-Range Championship aggregate.

HIGH POWER RIFLE LONG-RANGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

John Wilson of Ankeny, Iowa, won the Tompkins Trophy and NRA High Power Rifle Long-Range national championship title at Camp Atterbury on Sunday, August 18. Wilson posted an aggregate score of 1241-73X to claim the title.

Wilson’s score also earned him the High Military Veteran honor. Additionally, he won the Leech Cup match with a score of 199-14X, securing victory in the shoot-off with a score of 100-5X.

“The best shooters in the country showed up to Camp Atterbury this year, and it was an honor to shoot with them,” he said about competing at the 2024 NRA High Power Rifle Long-Range National Championships this summer.

Wilson was shooting Eliseo Universal Match Rifle chassis chambered in 6.5 EL-MO and .308 Win.

Claiming second place in the 2024 NRA High Power Rifle Long-Range aggregate was Amanda L. Elsenboss of Woodbury, Connecticut, who walked away from Camp Atterbury’s Range Six with a score of 1240-62X. In addition, Elsenboss topped the Remington Trophy match leaderboard with 199-12X, winning the shoot-off after posting a score of 98-6X. Elsenboss previously won the NRA High Power Rifle Long-Range aggregate title and the Tompkins Trophy in 2021 and 2023.

Taking third place in the NRA High Power Rifle Long-Range aggregate this year was John Friguglietti of Lincolnton, North Carolina, with a score of 1240-60X. Not only that, he picked up the High Palma Rifle title and the Bert Rollins Trophy. Friguglietti also won the Edward D. Andrus Memorial Trophy match with a score of 199-9X, as well as the High Palma title with 449-25X and the Sierra Trophy match victory with 796-41X.

As for High Service Rifle, the Billy C. Atkins Trophy went to Jonathan O’Neal with a score of 1217-49X, giving him a Service Rifle sweep across all three High Power competitions at the NRA Nationals this year: OTC, Mid-Range and Long-Range. O’Neal also won the Farr Trophy with a score of 193-8X, was the Palma Individual match runner-up with 449-23X and captured the Palma Service Rifle aggregate title with 768-26X.

Among the other individual honors, Phillip R. Crowe of Cullman, Alabama, was ranked at the top of the Mustin Trophy match leaderboard after posting a score of 200-14X. He won the shoot-off with 99-8X. In the Wimbledon Cup match, victory went to Morgan Dietrich of Ankeny, Iowa, with a score of 199-11X and 99-3X in the shoot-off. Dietrich was also the winner of the Palma Individual Trophy match with 449-25X, followed by the aforementioned Jonathan O’Neal as the runner-up with 449-23X and Larry Sollars of Cumming, Georgia, in third place with 448-29X.

A U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit shooter, Staff Sgt. Jarrod McGaffic, won the Canadian Cup match with a score of 707-39X. As for the Porter Trophy match, the win went to an Army National Guard competitor, Maj. Samuel K. Freeman of Hendersonville, North Carolina, who posted a score of 193-4X. In addition, the Herb “Doc” Aiken Memorial Trophy match victory went to Ohio’s Joseph F. Bakies with a score of 199-9X. As mentioned previously, Bakies was also the third ranked shooter in the 2024 Mid-Range aggregate.

In the team matches, the Roumanian Trophy match winner was the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit team with a score of 784-38X, appropriately named the USAMU team. For the Roumanian Trophy, four-member teams shoot 20 shots each at 1,000 yards. Winning team members included Staff Sgt. Lee Bahten, Staff Sgt. Shane Butler, Staff Sgt. Benjamin Cleland, Staff Sgt. Jarrod McGaffic, Team Captain Spc. Adam Fitzpatrick and Team Coach Sgt. 1st Class Alexander Deal. The top shooter on the USAMU team in the Roumanian Trophy match was Bahten with 199-12X. Team USAMU also picked up the Herrick Trophy Team match victory with a score of 792-28X. For this match, Cleland was the top shooter with 200-8X.

The 2024 NRA National High Power Long-Range Championships at Camp Atterbury ended with the Palma Trophy Team matches on Monday, August 19. Team USNRT-Rowe, including Morgen Dietrich, Larry Sollars, Brandon Green, Bob Gill, Team Captain Kim Rowe and Coach Charles Rowe, topped the Palma Rifle Team leaderboard with a score of 1780-97X. The high shooters on USNRT-Rowe was Larry Sollars with 448-30X.

Taking the Palma Team Service Rifle title at Camp Atterbury this year was the Illinois State Silver team with 1434-27X. Illinois State Silver was also the only entry, with team members Angela Rainer, John Powers (also team captain and team coach), Michael James and Daniel Chisholm. Posting the high score on this team was James with 440-17X.

There were 49 total entries in the 2024 NRA National High Power Rifle Long-Range Championship aggregate.
