One of the biggest competitive shooting success stories over the past decade has been the Precision Rifle Series (PRS), which skyrocketed in popularity with a focus on precision long-range. Now the people behind PRS plan to debut a rimfire version, unsurprisingly called the "PRS Rimfire Series."

PRS, with origins as a fun way to keep shooting skills sharp prior to hunting season, has evolved into a top-tier shooting league, complete with a slick website and leaderboard rankings with data gathered from regional matches held across the country. The group plans to take the same approach with the proposed rimfire series as with the center-fire one.

By throwing its hat into precision rimfire competition, PRS joins established .22 LR long-range games like the Lapua Practical Rimfire Challenge and NRL22. Pushing the .22 LR cartridge to the limit, precision rimfire has rapidly expanded as a sport over the past few years. And with good reason—modern rimfire ammunition, firearms and optics allows a dedicated competitor that is well seated in the fundamentals of shooting to become quite successful in distance shooting without spending a fortune.

If the runaway success of PRS is any indicator, the new Rimfire Series should prove to be just as popular with shooters, if not more.

Here are some excerpts from the Rimfire Series statement that was released on the PRS Facebook page:

"Every PRS Rimfire club will have their own club page on our website that automatically calculates and tracks internal club rimfire series scores using the same simple upload system [modeled after the PRS Regional Series]."

"Scores from each Rimfire Club will populate the corresponding Regional PRS Rimfire Series. Rimfire shooters will compete for standings at their local club level and also within their region."

"... all rimfire shooters will receive a PRS Rimfire profile that tracks all of their scores, highlights their equipment and celebrates their achievements."

The statement goes on to say that over the next few weeks the PRS will welcome input on the new endeavor and form a Rimfire Committee "composed of shooters, industry partners and match directors." If you are interested in contributing, email PRS directly at [email protected].
