Team USA’s Derrick Mein exited the Paris 2024 Olympics Men’s Trap qualification round in sixth place with a score of 122+13 after the shoot-off, giving him a spot in today’s final at the Chateauroux Shooting Center at 3:30 p.m. (Paris time).

During day two of Men’s Trap qualification, Mein climbed from the 12th place ranking he earned on Monday to as high as fifth place during the competition, missing two targets in the first round and one target in the second round. Over the next three rounds, he was perfect with 75 consecutive hits. He walked away from qualification in regulation with a score of 122, tied for fifth place with five other shooters. After the shoot-off, Mein’s +13 score gave him the sixth position in the six-person final.

In Olympic Trap events, the top six athletes from qualification advance to the final, which has shooters face a series of targets, with progressive eliminations beginning after all the finalists have fired at the required number of targets (20 or 25 targets), continuing until the gold and silver medalists are decided. In the final, shooters get only one shot for each target. After all six of the finalists have completed 25 targets, the lowest ranking athlete is eliminated. Elimination continues for each subsequent series of five targets until the bronze medalist is decided. Gold and silver medalists are decided after the final 10 targets.

The weather in Chateauroux-Deols, France, today is hot, about 94° F with not much of a breeze. However, the heat doesn’t seem to have affected Mein’s performance.
