Range USA, the nation’s largest operator of indoor gun ranges, has reached a milestone: the opening of its 50th location, in Chester, Virginia. Since its founding in 2012, the Cincinnati-based chain has grown into a powerhouse in firearms retail, training and community education, now welcoming shooters in over 14 states.
The new Chester facility embodies the company’s emphasis on safety and responsible ownership, featuring advanced indoor shooting lanes, certified instructors and a comprehensive firearms selection.
“Our mission is to develop responsible gun owners by setting the standard for approachable, clean and safe indoor gun ranges,” said Tom Willingham, founder and CEO of Range USA. “We aim to be the place everyone thinks of when saying, ‘Let’s go to the range.’”
The story behind Range USA’s rise begins with Willingham’s own frustrating first experience at a gun shop and indoor range.
“I was excited when a friend invited me to go to my first gun shop and indoor range one Saturday morning. Instead, the visit was dark, dirty and disorganized, with staff more interested in testing knowledge than helping newcomers.”
Recognizing that shooters were being underserved and misrepresented, Willingham, then 51 and with no industry experience, invested his savings to open the first Range USA in Cincinnati in 2012. From that single location, built on a commitment to clean and welcoming spaces, the chain has grown into the largest operator of indoor shooting ranges in the world, emphasizing responsible gun ownership and a customer-first approach.
Range USA’s expansion shows no signs of slowing. Two additional locations are slated to open soon in Smyrna, Tennessee, and Monroeville, Pennsylvania. In 2024 alone, the chain welcomed 350,000 new shooters, contributing to a total of more than 10 million visitors and more than 300,000 students (classes and private lessons) trained since its inception.
As the network grows, Range USA aims to make shooting sports accessible to newcomers while maintaining a strong focus on education and safety, reinforcing its commitment to creating quality indoor ranges for shooters of all experience levels.
