Tactical clothing can sometimes become bulky or misshaped, even downright uncomfortable. Finding quality clothing to wear to the range that is durable, comfortable and functional for the tasks at hand can sometimes be difficult. Earlier this year, I came across Kaos Lightweight Range Pants from Virtus Outdoors ($100, Virtus-Shop.com), and needless to say I was impressed. Virtus has tactical pants figured out.

Virtus Outdoors bills their clothing as “Marine-approved tactical wear to withstand any environment.” The company’s motif is evident in their name, Virtus, which in Ancient Rome meant bravery, courage, power and strength. While I can’t firmly say whether these pants made me braver, stronger or more courageous―I can say that when I first slipped on the Kaos range pants, they certainly improved my mood. The fresh design and obvious attention to small details can transform clothing from good to great, like the sturdy zippers that are quiet to use―these little things really add up.

Virtus Kaos Lightweight Pants
The Virtus Kaos pants were not only comfortable and durable, but also head-turning with their novel design and attention to detail.

All the usual bells and whistles you expect from a pair of tactical pants that MSRP for $100 are present. Durable water repellent properties are incorporated with the inclusion of eclipse barrier technology, which is designed to prevent wetness and enhance breathability. I never felt too “swampy” wearing the Kaos pants, even on extremely hot days at Camp Atterbury.

The Kaos Lightweight range pants quickly became one of my favorites for heading to the range. They aren’t bulky the way other tactical pants are, while still maintaining optimum functionality, especially the pockets. The four front and back pockets are mesh lined for breathability, which is great during hot summers, like the one we had this year on the East coast. Both of the rear pockets are zippered. And, there are two extra pockets with openings located high on the inseam that my iPhone fit in perfectly. Though not quite cargo pockets, they are less conspicuous and easier to get to. They can also carry spare magazines, while still adhering to common action shooting rules.

Not only did the Virtus Kaos pants become my go-to pants for spending time at the range, but they also meandered into my general outdoor clothing rotation. Dog walking, camping, hunting etc. They are just that great. As for construction, I’ve only worn the pants since May but with the usual trouble areas double-stitched, I think they will last a long time. The articulated knees are especially useful for when going kneeling or prone with your rifle.

And believe it or not, these pants are conversation-starters. Friends and colleagues who see me wearing the pants with the cool embroidered logos for the first time would inevitably ask me “What brand is that?” or “What kind of pants are those, they look comfortable?” Get your own pair.

These are excellent pants that can be worn just about any place, they aren’t too tight or too skinny, and are good for everyday wear. Learn more at www.virtus-shop.com
