St. Augustine, Florida-based SK Customs has produced a ground-up recreation of the Colt 1911 that Prohibition era gangster Al Capone reportedly called “Sweetheart” (a nod to his wife Mae), limited to just 200 numbered units and chambered in the original .45 ACP.
The build follows the classic Government Model platform, a design that had already cemented its reputation for reliability well before Capone ever tucked one into a shoulder holster. But what made the original “Sweetheart” notable was its artistry. SK’s recreation faithfully reproduces the detailed floral scroll engraving that defined high-end Colts of the 1920s, the kind of ornamentation that turned a working firearm into something closer to a statement piece. During the Roaring Twenties, wealthy and powerful figures routinely commissioned personalized scrollwork and inscriptions on their guns.
SK Customs has replicated the period-correct details with care. The left side of the slide carries traditional patent roll marks from Colt’s Manufacturing Company as they appeared in Capone’s day, while the right side features “Colt Automatic Caliber .45” with Rampart roll marks and the Government Model designation on the dust cover. Floral scrollwork runs across both sides of the slide, matching the patterns found on the original. Each pistol in the series carries a unique number, 001 through 200, engraved on the rear panel.
The sights are custom-built to mirror the originals: an adjustable rear paired with a partridge front serrated staked sight. The front strap is checkered, and a newly designed checkered mainspring housing rounds out the grip ergonomics. Frame, slide and hardware are all polished and blued to a period-appropriate finish.
Then there are the grips: genuine vintage red deer stag, each set carrying its own natural bark pattern. No two are identical, which is arguably the detail that gives this recreation its most authentic character.
“Historically, this 1911 represents more than just Capone himself,” Simon Khiabani, the founder of SK Customs said. “It embodies the broader culture of the Prohibition era, where crime figures adopted both extravagance and symbolism in their possessions.”
The SK Customs Al Capone “Sweetheart” Colt 1911 is priced at $2,700 and available for pre-order now, with shipments expected to begin in July 2026.
