Compensators used to be racegun equipment, hanging off threaded muzzles with all the fragility that implies. Staccato has spent the last few years chipping away at that assumption, and the new HD P4X is the most direct challenge yet: a compensated 2011 sized and built for a patrol belt.
The X in the name denotes the compensator. Instead of threading a separate device onto the barrel, Staccato machines both as a single piece, a 4-inch DLC-finished unit sitting flush with the slide. Ports vent gas upward to hold the muzzle down through sustained fire, and since nothing bolts on, there’s nothing to work loose after a few thousand rounds. The company proved the concept on the compact HD C4X. This gun scales it up.
Within the 2011 HD family, the P4X lands between the C4X and the standard HD pistols. Its frame is billet-machined from 4140 steel, and the resulting 32.5-ounce unloaded weight is doing real work here, soaking up 9 mm impulse so follow-up shots stay honest. Staccato calls it the most shootable mission-ready pistol it builds.
The full-size grip got specific attention for duty carry. Front and back straps run aggressive texture while the side panels stay friendlier to bare hands and cover garments, so the gun locks in on the draw without punishing whoever wears it for 10 hours. There’s an ambidextrous safety and slide stop, reversible magazine catch and active firing pin block. Plus, the trigger is a single-action break at 4 to 4.5 pounds.
Magazines might be the most practical decision on the spec sheet. The P4X feeds from Glock-pattern mags, ships with two 18-round steel Mec-Gars and accepts most G17-size magazines, which means affordable spares are everywhere. A fully captive flat wire recoil system is new for this model and optics mount through Staccato’s HD HOST system. In addition, the company ran the gun through testing at the Federal Ballistic Research Facility, which tells you plenty about the buyer it has in mind.
Everything ships in a Savior Equipment soft case with room for three magazines, plus a cable lock and documentation. Made in Texas. Pricing starts at $3,599 across three configurations, with dealer availability beginning July 13. More at staccato2011.com.
