Springfield Armory recently unveiled its new 1911 DS Prodigy Compact handguns chambered in 9 mm Luger and available in 3.5-inch and 4.25-inch variants. Configured around a flush-fitting, double-stack magazine, these new pistols boast a 15-round capacity.

4.25-inch Prodigy Compact
The Prodigy Compact from Springfield Armory takes the proven 1911 platform and enhances it with double-stack capacity and a carry-focused feature set. Reconfigured around a 15-round double-stack magazine, the Prodigy’s compact polymer grip module mounts to its lightweight aluminum frame to reduce weight, while a shortened beavertail and recontoured hammer further downsize the overall footprint. The forged stainless steel bull barrel on the Prodigy Compact is finished in black DLC (4.25-inch model pictured).

More from Springfield Armory: “The new 15-round Prodigy Compact takes the proven 1911 platform and enhances it with double-stack capacity as well as a carry-driven feature set.”

Both the 3.5- and 4.25-inch variants come with two magazines.

Designed for concealed carry and self-defense, Prodigy Compact pistols have a tritium front sight post for visibility in low-light conditions and a serrated black U-notch rear sight unit. In addition, the pistols employ AOS (Agency Optic System) plates made for the 1911 DS.

Machined from billet steel, each AOS plate is designed specifically to deliver proper optic height for intuitive sight picture and instant target acquisition. The Prodigy Compact ships with a HEX Dragonfly compatible plate, along with a standard cover plate. Additional optic-specific plates are available for purchase at the Springfield Armory Store.

To ensure the Prodigy Compacts are lightweight—with the 3.5-inch model weighing 25.5 ounces and the 4.25-inch model weighing 29 ounces—their polymer grip modules are mounted to a billet machined 7075-T6 aluminum frame.

3.5-inch Prodigy Compact
Optics ready with a tritium front sight and Picatinny rail, the Springfield Armory Prodigy Compact combines characteristics of the 1911 with 15-round capacity for EDC. The frame is made from billet 7075-T6 hardcoat anodized aluminum with black Cerakote (3.5-inch model pictured).

The pistols’ slides are made of forged carbon steel, and the match-grade bull barrels are forged stainless steel.

Besides an ambidextrous safety, Prodigy Compact handguns incorporate recontoured hammers and beavertail grips safeties that minimize bulk.

As for corrosion-resistance, the pistols feature a black Cerakote finish on their metal parts that meld with the black polymer grip module. Plus, the barrels sport a black DLC finish.

MSRP for 1911 DS Prodigy Compact handguns is $1,549 for both the 3.5-inch and 4.25 inch variants. Learn more at springfield-armory.com.
