If you enjoy wide-open spaces, friendly shooters and instant gratification on the firing line, then check out the Hat Creek Rifle and Pistol Club in Burney, CA. Tucked away in a remote mountain valley, Hat Creek offers plenty of opportunities in almost every facet of rifle and pistol shooting disciplines, especially for silhouette aficionados. The facilities consist of four separate shooting venues for pistol/smallbore, high power rifle, cowboy action and a police range.

A year-round calendar illustrates the club’s popularity, and sanctioned contests bring shooters from as far away as Nevada, Washington, Idaho and Arizona. Silhouette events, especially lever-action pistol cartridge and smallbore are very popular among members. The club’s cowboy action group has a devoted following and the annual “Ambush at Hat Creek” held each June sees an impressive attendance. In addition to regular monthly matches, Hat Creek has hosted the California State Muzzleloader Championships since 1992. This year, the club also welcomed the Northern California Regional Lever-Action Championships to the range.

The police range is a popular destination and was designed specifically to meet the needs of the law enforcement officers who practice and train at the club. Members of the County Sheriffs Office, Highway Patrol, U.S. Park Service and Forest Service use the range extensively and may come and go at their convenience.

The club is committed to junior shooters and opens its facilities free of charge to youth groups such as Boy Scouts, 4-H and other organizations. Juniors shoot free in all scheduled matches and are provided with ear and eye protection if needed.

A family-oriented range, the club is open to the public on Sundays and newcomers are encouraged to visit. Additionally, the Hat Creek Rifle and Pistol Club is proud of its long-standing relationship with Pacific Gas and Electric, from which they’ve leased the property for over 40 years. During this time the club has remained incident free, maintaining a perfect safety record.

The club extends a welcome invitation to all SSUSA readers. First-time shooters and guests shoot for free. For more information on the Hat Creek Rifle and Pistol Club visit www.hcrpclub.org or e-mail [email protected].
