Hampden-Sydney College’s Board of Trustees recently authorized the construction of a new shooting sports facility at the Slate Hill Plantation property in Prince Edward County, Virginia, after a successful alumni-led fundraising effort.

This new state-of-the-art shooting range will enhance Hampden-Sydney College’s recreational offerings for students and staff, as well as support the college’s competitive shooting club team.

Garnering $825,000 in alumni contributions, the initiative is not only to provide a first-rate facility—Hampden-Sydney College will also use any funds remaining after construction to establish an endowment for the shooting ranges ongoing operations and maintenance, as well as to support the colleges outdoor education program.

Something else to note: the resolution emphasizes the preservation of Slate Hill Plantations historical significance, taking great care to avoid any impact on the cemetery or the site of the historic home on the property.

More about Hampden-Sydney College: “A nationally ranked private college for men that held its first classes in 1775, Hampden-Sydney in Virginia is known for its mission of forming ‘good men and good citizens,’ as well as its codes of honor and conduct, 40-year-old rhetoric program, liberal arts curriculum and devoted alumni network.”

The new facility at Slate Hill Plantation will expand opportunities for competitive shooting sports and recreational shooting for Hampden-Sydney students.

We are all tremendously excited about the expansion of our shooting program, which is a critical component of the colleges High Adventure Program and outdoor education offerings,Richard Pantele, Hampden-Sydney College’s dean of students said. While we know that our competitive shooting team will benefit greatly from this expansion, we know, too, that the experiential learning that all of our students will have access to for both the shooting sports and the historic property will help further the Colleges mission in creative and meaningful ways.

The shooting range expansion marks a significant addition to Hampden-Sydneys campus facilities, which the college said is “reflecting its unwavering commitment to providing diverse opportunities for its students while honoring its historical roots and alumni relationships.
