New Apex Bag Rider 2.0 Gives Ruger Precision Rifle Shooters Steadier Elevation Control

Rear bags do more work than most shooters credit them for. Squeeze one and the buttstock rises. Ease off and it settles. That is the crude version of elevation control behind a bolt gun, and it depends on a support hand that gets tired somewhere around the middle of a long string.

Catalyst Arms built its Apex Bag Rider to take that job away from the hand. This second-generation version narrows the profile and reworks the angle at its rear. Slide the bag toward the muzzle and the ramp lifts the stock, or pull it back and the stock drops.

Ruger’s factory buttstock on the RPR carries a bottom Picatinny rail, which is a solid mounting surface and a poor riding surface—narrow, slotted and inclined to dig into a bag rather than glide across it. The Apex Bag Rider 2.0 is wider than that rail, and the added contact area spreads load across the bag, a pack or the support hand. Photos from Catalyst show a molded polymer wedge with three relief cutouts running through the body, tapering to a point at the rear. Nothing about it protrudes far enough to catch a sling or a barricade edge.

Installation runs about as long as it takes to find the right hex key. The Apex Bag Rider 2.0 slides over the factory bottom rail and clamps down with a single screw visible on its upper face.

Fitment covers Gen 1 through Gen 3 Ruger Precision Rifles in short-action and magnum-action configurations. Catalyst notes that while the part mounts to a standard Picatinny rail, it makes no promises about other stocks—worth keeping in mind for anyone tempted to bolt one onto a chassis gun and call it done.

Precision Rifle Series stages and NRL22 barricade work both reward a shooter who can re-index height between targets without rebuilding the entire position, and a repeatable ramp beats a hand squeeze for consistency under a par time. Prone competitors get a different benefit: a stock resting fully on the bag rather than being held there frees the support hand for other work and removes one source of drift between shots.
