SK Customs, the St. Augustine, Florida, outfit that has built a reputation on series-driven, limited-edition custom firearms, has announced the San Miguel Arcángel, which translates from Spanish as Saint Michael the Archangel. It’s the fourth installment in SK’s ongoing Saints Series, and like its predecessors it’s built around a deeply specific narrative rendered through the most patient engraving and gilding work that modern custom shops can produce. The platform is a Colt 1911 chambered in .38 Super with a production run capped at 500 pieces.

Simon Khiabani, founder of SK Guns, framed the project around that cultural inheritance. Throughout history, as he put it, Saint Michael has inspired churches, artworks and festivals around the world. The image symbolizes hope and faith and the victory of good over evil. SK’s new San Miguel Arcángel pistol is an attempt to translate that symbolism into a physical object that a collector can hold.

The execution is where the work earns its place. The frame, slide and select controls are highly polished in a deep Colt Royal Blue finish that pulls all the available light into the surface. As for the controls themselves, they’re finished in 24-karat gold, and the gold work continues across nearly every visible flat on the pistol. The forward sides of the slide are engraved with a shaded old floral scroll. Grips are purple Kirinite, and the gold Colt Rampant medallion is inset into each grip panel. In addition, the Michaelmas Daisy, the flower historically associated with Saint Michael, appears in 24-karat gold on both side panels.

On the rear left panel, the engraver placed the Mission San Miguel Arcángel, which was the 16th of California’s Spanish missions to be founded and which carries the same patron as the pistol itself. On the rear right panel, the edition number sits inside a scroll engraved in a biblical style, so that each of the 500 pistols carries its own place in the run rendered with the same care as the religious imagery.
